For lunch, Mike and I went with a friend from work, Christine, over to a Hong Kong Style restaurant in a newer shopping place by our hotel. It was very nice inside, with a very western-style layout. We had the following: chicken w/ bones – lightly fried, with a very slight BBQ flavor – not too bad, but a bit difficult to eat with chopsticks. We also had sweet and sour fish, fried rice, and a pastry filled with durian fruit. All of which was excellent. The durian fruit, if you do not know, is notorious throughout Asia as having the consistency of custard and the flavor of sweaty socks. However, as a filling for a pastry, it didn’t stand out – in fact you would have just thought it to be a sweet custard filling. Please note that I will later in my visit find real durian fruit and report on it.
After a full day of work, we had dinner w/ one of Mikes teams around 6:00pm – the Seafood restaurant by Xinghai sq. (same one Winson took me to on Sunday). There, I tried the sea urchin – raw – very hard spiny shell, with an orange interior that was a bit firmer than oyster and a crisp taste of the sea – delicious! There we also enjoyed a variety of other fish, vegetables, cabbage, and dumplings. One of my acquaintances from a past visit was in the group and remembered from a previous visit what my other friend Mike taught him for a toast – “Punish it!”.
By 8:30pm, dinner was over and we were back at the hotel.
